How to Download YouTube Thumbnails

YouTube stores every public video thumbnail on its content delivery network (CDN). Once you have the video ID, you can preview and save the image in a few seconds—no browser extension required.

Method 1: Use a YouTube thumbnail downloader

The fastest route for most people:

1. Copy the video URL from YouTube (watch page, Shorts, or youtu.be link).
2. Open the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader.
3. Paste the link and select Get thumbnail.
4. Preview each available resolution and click Download thumbnail.

This approach shows every CDN size YouTube exposes for that video, including maxresdefault, sddefault, and smaller fallbacks when high-resolution assets are missing.

Method 2: Build the thumbnail URL manually

Every thumbnail follows a predictable pattern:

https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg

Method 3: Download on desktop (right-click)

After you open a direct thumbnail URL in a new tab:

1. Load https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg.
2. Right-click the image.
3. Choose Save image as… and pick a folder.

Works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on macOS and Windows.

Method 4: Download on iPhone or iPad

Mobile Safari does not offer a simple long-press save for cross-origin CDN images on every site. Instead:

1. Paste the video link into the downloader on your phone.
2. Tap the resolution you want.
3. Use Download thumbnail and save to Photos or Files.

Alternatively, open the direct JPG URL, tap the share icon, and choose Save to Files.

Method 5: Download on Android

The same downloader workflow applies:

1. Copy the YouTube link in the YouTube app (Share → Copy link).
2. Paste it into the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader.
3. Download the JPG to your gallery or Files app.

Chrome on Android may also let you long-press a direct thumbnail URL and tap Download image.

Choose the right resolution
