How to Make Text Readable on a Mobile Thumbnail

Most YouTube views start on a phone. If your headline vanishes at feed size, the click never happens—no matter how good the video is.

Start with mobile preview, not full canvas

Design at 1280×720, but evaluate at phone scale throughout the process:

1. Zoom out until the canvas is about 160–200 px wide on screen.
2. If you cannot read the headline instantly, increase size or cut words.
3. Repeat after every major layout change.

This mimics how thumbnails appear in the home feed better than viewing at 100%.

Limit word count

Word count	Typical result
1–3 words	Strong on mobile
4–5 words	Acceptable with large type
6+ words	Usually unreadable

Put supporting detail in the video title, not the image.

Choose heavy, simple fonts

Prefer:

• Bold geometric sans-serif families (Impact-style, Montserrat Black, Bebas Neue)
• Thick strokes and tight tracking
• One headline weight—skip body text on the image

Avoid:

• Thin script or serif fonts
• Outlined text without a solid fill
• Drop shadow as the only contrast tool

Maximize contrast

Readable combinations:

• White text on dark, desaturated backgrounds
• Black text on bright yellow or white panels
• Colored headline on neutral gray with a solid backing shape

Place text on a semi-opaque bar or shape when the background photo is busy.

Use safe margins

Test with real context

Screenshot your thumbnail at feed size beside two competitor videos in the same niche. If yours is the hardest to read, simplify.

• Format: JPG quality 85+ or PNG if under 2 MB
